Week 8

Tuesday 15th November 2011 (1year and 10months and still waiting...)

• Day started 9:30am.
• Exciting day as had a meeting with old school art teacher Mrs. C. Jones.
• Was great to see her as well as school. Met a few more people I used to know: Dawn Jarrett (Classroom Assistant), Lisa Handley (Classroom Assistant), Mr. R. Baker (Art teacher), and Mr. I. Trevethick (Deputy Head).
• Funny to see stair lift in foyer gone and new stair lift in Art Department.
• At meeting it was agreed I do 3hours Tuesday mornings from 10th January to 27th March 2012. Cannot wait!
• Met with the secretary, Mrs. Thurlow to receive CRB forms for both me and Maureen. Also to inform that I have my own keys to the lift.

• Back at uni, by 11am filled in the CRB forms to hand back in on Thursday with passport and two proofs of current address.
• After lunch coloured in my re-drawn 'one-off' bad guy, which I scanned in over the weekend.

Found out that he actually looked older than more sinister. So I decided to keep hold of the previous version.

Sorry Claire and Luka. Your advice didn't quite work!

• Started colouring the Teleport Machine.
• Day ended 3:45pm.

Thursday 17th November 2011

• Day started 9:30am.
• Another trip to school with CRB forms and proofs.
• Had to wait for Mrs. Thurlow until she came back from an appointment. Meanwhile, met Mr. Pryer, (surprise surprise). He was an RE teacher (and my favourite of them all). Now, his job is to look after the disabled students at school. See how they are doing and see what they need. He asked me to have a chat with one disabled student (Sophie) who has a potential and wants to go to uni to do Art, when I start my work experience. I was happy to do just that and cannot wait!
• Mrs. Thurlow came and sorted out our forms and photocopied our proofs ready to be sent off.
• Back at uni by 11am.
• Carried on colouring the Teleport Machine and added shadings.

The idea of the blue screen where the name of the destination appears when on and typed, came from my blue screen on my musical keyboard.

Also, thinking about the shading, while I was shading the Teleport Machine, I thought back to some cartoons I used to watch where the background were in details whereas the characters were in flat block colours. The background stays detailed until something is moved in different angles.

The best example I found was from The Little Mermaid Series. This segment at 2:20 shows a pile of rock pushed from detail to flat.

This idea has made me relieved as I felt that if I were to add shading to everything including the characters would be very time consuming and very tiring!

Week 7

Monday 7th November 2011

• Over weekend received an email from scchool Art teacher, Mrs. Jones for dates of initial metting. Told her we can meet up on 15th Novemember.
• Day started 9:30am.
• Prepared for group crit for next day.
• Trimmed and stapled pages of my Graphic Movel so far, which I printed out over the weekend. Did the same for the script.

Had a bit of a problem with trimming and stapling my draft Graphic Novel as I realised that the prints werent exactly in the middle of the page, making it hard to distinguish where to cut. But we managed to solve the problem, by just rimming off the stapled side.

• Edited my Professional Practice Programme by adding the notes from last week.
• Started drawing the Teleport Machine front front using the advice from Mark Crilley regarding perspective.

Tuesday 8th November 2011

• Day started 10am.
• Jo Newman held my group crit.
• Felt quite confident about todays group crit. Had Jo Goodchild (L5 part 2), Claire and Luka (L6 full time). However when group crit started I didnt like the way it was held!
• Me and Jo looked at Claire and Luka's work, while Claire and Luka looked at mine and Jo's.

Quite interesting work though it was all abstract to me and I find it a little bit difficult to understand unless I know the concept.

Claire’s work was little bit more clear though as I felt with the pictures hung on washing line with writing to go with it told a story about each individual in the picture. But it also felt like it was an interactive piece of work as maybe the pictures and writing could be moved around.

Luka’s work was definitely complicated! The only thing that came to mind was that she was trying to show that even the seasons Autumn and Winter have something pretty about them, as well as Spring and Summer. I was questioned though why they there was manmade objects (wadding and pompoms) and natural objects (autumn leaves) been put together? For me, at least that question was easy to answer. If snow is the beauty of Winter, how will it ever last inside a building, as well as a product of someone’s work? I believe the wadding was simply used to represent snow.

Anyway, enough backing Luka up, as she and Claire say it was hard to understand my work! And the stupid question “What’s the connection between the Comic and Script?” kept playing in my head as I could not believe they didn’t bother reading! Hello! Comics are still for reading, you know!!!

I did take a couple of advice, which was to try and make my bad guys more fierce and add more 3D. What the girls didn’t take into consideration that there’s a limit to what I can do!

Anyway, like they say, they are just ideas and it is up to me whether I want to take them on board or not.

Jo’s work was the most interesting. For one thing it was an animation and I can understand that! I just wanted to see the whole set. I liked the fact that the hands of spoons can be manipulated and I did play around with them haha!

Cannot wait to see more of her work!!!

• After lunch re-drew the 'one off bad guy from 'Vi-acklings from Vi-ackle' prologue. This time left it with rough pencil line, emphasizing the roughness of character.
• Finished drawing front view of Teleport Machine.

• Started drawing the back of Teleport Machine.
• Day finished 4pm.

Thursday 10th November 2011

• Also drew the house of Vaux and Hal on the street, using the pictures of the hobbit houses as reference.

Day ended at 4pm.

• Day started 9:30am.
• Dedicated whole day to draw other angles of the Teleport Machine, using same technique from Mark Crilley. 

Week 6

Monday 31st October 2011 (Halloween)

• Thursday, prior to today, received a letter from the Head of Art at my secondary school, when I got home. Could not wait to reply via email as it seemed very promising!

• Day started 9am.
• Sent an email, replying to the letter I received from school regarding my placement.
• Hosptital appointment betwwen 11:45am - 1pm.
• Looked at CV templates online in order ti help write my own CV.

Tuesday 1st November 2011

• Day started 9:30am.
• Typed my first draft of CV, using one of the templates I found online the day before.
• 10:50am - Had a one-to-one tutorial with Ruth regarding Pro-Practice Module. Showed her letter and she was happy that I got a placement already.
• Ruth looked at my first draft of the my programme and gave some pointers to work on.

Met Rita and felt sorry for her as she still struggling to find a placement. It looked like I was the only one who found one. Nevertheless, she was pleased with me.

• Completed script for Chapter 6 and 7.

• Day started 9:30am.

Had a discussion on the language used. Definitely no swearing. Vaux was going to say words like 'ain't' and probably 'damn', but even though my Graphic novel is aimed at teens and above, it was decided that the language used should also teach the readers the right words to use.

• After lunch, another lecture with Jane McAllistair looking at CVs and Covering Letters.

• Jane had a look at my first draft CV and helped me be put on the right track.
• Day ended at 4pm.

Week 5

Monday 24th October 2011

• Weekend - Did a drawing of Granddad's Teleport Machine.

Mark Crilley's new video on how to something in perspective helped me to get the proportion of the furniture just right.

• Day started 9:30.
• Re-drew over the pencil lines of Teleport Machine with Fine Liner.

• Drew the same teleport machine at different angle using Mark Crilley's guide and used Fine Liner to draw over pencil.

• Looked at Roger Dean's work. Quite liked what I saw as I felt that they could help with designing more buildings on Planet Vi-ackle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Dean_(artist) 

This appealled to me as it looks like an optical illusion, which the interests developed from my previous projects.

The branch of the tree in the foreground also looks as though it could be a path with the background looking like a lake

This picture of a room with no corners by Roger Dean has inspired me more regarding the buildings in Planet Vi-ackle having rounded doors, windows and walls.

Though his work looks sophisticated, I have decided to look at his work regarding furniture and gagdets that may be used in my Graphic Novel and blend them in with what I took in when looking at Roger Dean.

Thursday 27th October 2011

• Day started 10am.
• Spoke to Dorota (fellow student) about work experience placements. I was advised to avoid secondary schools, and tried phoning up a couple of primary schools (forgetiing it was half term).
• Meeting with my Collaborative Project members. Dorota, Rita andI were present. Jo and Michelle G. were absent.

• Choice between Big Draw Little Draw, and Empty shop to Small Gallery.
• Me chose to designer flyers. But nothing confirmed until all 5 of us agree.
• Next meeting 14th October, 10am at Rita's house.
• Completed Chapter 3 and 4 of script for my Neg. Project.

very little children less than the age of 6years, and I intend to aim my Graphic Novel at teens and above. But now I am thinking this probably would give me some more idea regarding the foods and drinks my Vi-ackling have.

• Day started 9:30am.
• Completed Chapter 1 (Pages 16 - 21).

• Wrote a letter to my secondary school headmaster, regarding a placement for my Professional Practice Module.

Thursday 20th October 2011

• Prior to the day, did another drawing on Mondi saying 'Bye Vaux!' as she walks away.

• Day started 9:30am.
• Added the picture that I drew and edited into page 19.

Wanted to add a soft red boarder around the outside of the zig-zag frame of the bottom picture. However when added, it seemed like it was putting a bit of a strain on the eye, and too much was going on. Same went with the backround of Mondi and the girls walking away, as that was going to be in colour, but put a line drawing version instead.

• Completed writing Chapter 2, and began writing Chapter 3.

• After lunch - Another Pro Practice lecture introducing Jane McAllistair, Careers Consultant. Was interesting to know what she does. Also helped me feel a bit more better about module. Next time will look at CV. So have to try and write one before then.
