Week 11

Monday 5th December 2011
Over the weekend, did more pages of my Graphic Novel. Pages 11 - 13.
  • Did another drawing of Granddad and Hal's body for page 13 of Chapter 2.
  • Day started 9:30am.
  • Had a bit of mix-up. Our Term 1 Timetable mentioned a group tutorial for Professional Practice but there was no sign of it happening. There was a sign up one to one tutorial, but I already did that.
  • Did page 14 of Chapter 2.
  • I showed my work so far to a friend and he advised that the pages 7 and 8 can be done in another way. I agreed as I felt they weren't showing the story clearly. He showed me a different way of showing movement too, which has helped a lot.
  • I ditched the idea of double page spread and got rid of the bin and added a close up verion of Hal and broke his speech in to two.
  • Page 8 was split into two. One page Hal throwing cup in bin. Another page close up of cup falling towards bin.
  • Altered the title of the book with subheading.

Day ended 4pm.
  • Printed pages so far for another Group Crit tomorrow. The only problem was that the ink was running out and the pictures didn't look completed, but couldn't do anything about it.

Tuesday 6th December 2011
  • Day started 10am.
  • Was dreading Group Crit today. My work was presented second after another girl showed her progess on an educational/interactive book for KS1 kids. Pretty interesting and the only work that fascinated me, probably because our aim is at children, mine being a bit older.
  • I was surprised with the feedback of my work as I didn't get much of a criticism! Jo Newman mentioned that one of the pages looked effective with the ink running out. She said it's a good way of showing something fading away, and I liked that idea!
  • After lunch, continued with book, altering a few things.
  • Day ended 3:45pm.

Thursday 8th December 2011 (My Last Day of Term!)
  • Day started 9:30am.

  • Simply carried on with book. Pages15 and 16 of Chapter 2.
  • Day ended 4pm.

Week 10

Monday 28th November 2011

  • Over the weekend, I did a drawing of one type of bin there would be in a house on Planet Vi-ackle and coloured it in using Photoshop.

Obviously, I took the concept of a normal bin with a lid, but I never thought some ideas would actually come from Naughty NuNu from Teletubbies. This actually triggered when I looked at the Teletubbies' house when I compared it to a Hobbit house when research ideas for biuldings on Vi-ackle.

I gave the bin a red band which lights up when it sences a rubbish coming. It then opens itself up and closes when the rubbish is in.

    • Did pages 3 to 6 of Chapter 2.
Notice that 'the fighting Granddad' is now working with some wire at back of Teleport Machine.
    • Day started 9:30am.
    • Dedicated whole doing book.
    • Did pages 7 and 8 of Chapter 2.
    • Day ended 3:45pm.
    Tuesday 29th November 2011
    • Day started 9:30am.

    • Did a bit more drawings.
These may look unfinished but I have decided, to save time I will use ready drawn heads and just change the expressions.
    • From 1pm to 3pm. Profession Practice Workshop with Katie Woods. Was given a few activities and I worked with Rita and Jo from Collaborrative Group.
    • After workshop, continued with Negotiated Module and began designing the keyboard that comes out from the teleport machine. Used a picture from internet as reference.
    • Day ended 4pm.
    Thursday 1st December 2011

    • Prior to today managed to complete Teleport's keyboard.
    • Also coloured and edited Hal and Granddad sitting on Teleport Machine.
    • Day started 9:30am.
    • Began day with more Pro Practice research.

Comments from NASEN award judges: 'An exciting story with lots of cliffhangers.' 'It's a great cover which makes you want to pick it up.' (TES )
'this absorbing adventure story ... would provoke much useful discussion among KS3 students, both in the classroom and within a smaller book-group context.' (School Librarian )

This is close to the type audience I am aiming at for my books/stories.

    • After lunch carried on with negotiated module.

    Week 9

    Monday 21st November 2011
    • Did first two pages of Chapter 2 during weekend.

    • Day started 9:30am.
    • Mainly continued with colouring Teleport machine.

    • Day ended 3pm.

    Tuesday 22nd November 2011
    • Day started 10am.
    • Brief meeting with collaborative group about what time that afternoon we should have our tutorial. - 3:20pm.
    • Little bit of mix up with one to one tutorials but, I had mine with Demitrios.
He looked at my Work Experience form and told me to add what I was doing specifically, but to be honest I don't that until I start!
He also told me to re-write my programme and add exactly what I am looking at.

Followed Demitrios' advice and added some more things to my Pro-Practice Programme, but not my Work Experience Form.
    • Researched a local animation studio and was lucky to find CharacterShop.

Every animation studio would literally kill to have their work playing in cinemas alongside some of the greatest Hollywood kids movies, including smash hits from Pixar and Dreamworks.
Luckily, CharacterShop didn’t have to kill anyone to realise this lofty ambition – we just had to produce ‘The Boy with the Golden Toothbrush’, a stunning 5 minute mini-movie for Aquafresh Kids which will be showing at Cineworld cinemas during their sponsored ‘Movies for Juniors’ programme on weekend mornings.
Telling the story of how young Olly finds a magical Golden Toothbrush in his attic, which transports him to Nurdle World, where he finds out all about tooth care for kids. Showing in full, glorious HD technicolour with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, our animation has never looked and sounded so good.
Brushing your teeth has never seemed so much fun – look out for more Aquafresh animations soon on Boomerang and the world wide web!

This is the dream I like to achieve! Not making adverts for Aquafresh, but having my stories animated on the Big Screen!

Here at CharacterShop we’re into characters in a BIG way.  In fact, we love them so much we named the company after them!
Over the years we have created many hundreds of different characters for our clients and for a huge range of audiences – from pre-schoolers to teens to grown-ups.  Some are designed simply to entertain and amuse and some to deliver a more serious message.  We’ve even performed surgery on client’s existing characters – a nip here, a tuck there and hey presto – a beautiful new look!
Once we’ve made a character look great – then what?  Well, then we bring them to life – we make them move, walk, talk, jump, juggle, sing and dance.  We’ve done it for TV series, commercials, DVDs, websites, comic strips, games and even live shows.
So if you want to really bring your project to life, then call in at the CharacterShop and let our award-winning creativity give it some real character.
    See you soon!
This is interesting. It is in Birmingham which is convenient for and they look like they do the type of animation I have been fascinated regarding how it is done.
I notice that it is mentioned that they mainly do short stories and adverts, and that they will help you to bring your character to life. I feel that this is ideal for me as I have created my own characters, just need some help to bring them alive!
The fact that they do animations for a wide variety of audience and several different genres, I felt that my adventurous love stories for teen fits in perfectly!

I guess short stories and adverts are a good way to promote myself, so I hope they could help me one and be lucky enough to have a world wide audience.
I sent an email to Mark Vale, Head of Production (mark@thecharactershop.com) for an online interview.

May try to phone and ask to have a tour round as well.

    • Continued colouring other angles of Teleport Machine.

    • At 3:20pm, had Collaborative group tutorial with Stuart Whipps.
Rita showed a photo of the Gallery Space which she and Jo saw in Solihull the Tuesday before.
    This was what was mentioned:

    Confirmation of individual role
Dorota – Printing of publicity and catering
Sharni -    Design of exhibition fliers
Michelle – Curator / liaising with gallery staff
Jo – Communication –Setting up social network – photography- film
    Rita – Admin

    Discussion
Stuart Suggested because two of the group were interested in showing film in the exhibition that we could inquire if the gallery had facilities for setting-up a listening area  (T V with headphones) Rita said she will approach gallery and make inquiries.

    Publication of exhibition
It was suggested that the group should research the possibility of publishing the exhibition to a wider audience though publications such as pamphlets / hand-outs.

    Suggested contacts were
    Newspaper Club
Robin and Harry (An endless Supply)

Also it was suggested that we could publish the exhibition though the social network such as Twitter and Facebook or making a website.
    • In terms of what work to put up, I changed my mind and decided to put at my posters I did last year.
    • Regarding flyers, I wasn't sure what to put, so I asked Dorota.

    •  Day ended 4:20pm.
    Thursday 24th November 2011
    • Day started 9:30am.
    • Drwe some more pictures for Chapter 2. Hal and Granddad.

This drawing of Granddad looks like is ready to fight "Put 'em up!" But he is actually working behind the teleport machine, which I will add later.

    • Day ended 4pm.
